DAILY NOTES - February 24, 2008
- Winning In Style: Any victory on a major tour is an accomplishment, but Paula Creamer certainly got her 2008 season off to a flying start by birdieing the final three holes of the Fields Open to finish at 16 under par (200) and edge first- and second-round leader Jeong Jang by one. It was a stirring victory for the 21-year-old Creamer who, with 2nd and 3rd-place money list finishes already logged during a three-year career, might well be poised to make her own run at Lorena Ochoa…and Suzann Pettersen…and Annika Sorenstam…and…
- Chasing A Record: Now the only question that remains is whether or not Louis Oosthuizen can break Mark McNulty’s 21-year-old record for the lowest 72-hole aggregate in Sunshine Tour history. Following Friday’s course record 63 with a near-flawless Saturday 66, Oosthuizen sits on 195 – a remarkable 21-under-par – and enjoys a nine-shot lead over Hennie Otto, with Jake Roos and Warren Abery 10 back. McNulty’s record total of 259 was recorded at the Royal Swazi Sun Country Club in 1987, was matched in 1994 by David Frost at the South African PGA (played at the Wanderers Golf Club), and has not been seriously challenged until this week. Oosthuizen, however, would need another 63 to break it, which represents more than just a solid Sunday afternoon’s work.
- He Might Have Beaten Tiger: Neither K.J. Choi, nor Henrik Stenson could defeat Tiger Woods on Saturday at the WGC Match Play…but perhaps Stuart Cink might have. Cink dispatched Justin Leonard 4 & 2 in the second semi-final match at Dove Mountain, and did so with a flaming start, carding five birdies and an eagle over the first eight holes to build an insurmountable lead. Cink had earlier dashed off four late birdies in 3 & 2 quarter-final upset of Angel Cabrera, giving him plenty of momentum going into today’s final against Woods. Cink, a self-described underachiever, might well be poised for his biggest-ever victory…but then delivering another performance on par with Saturday’s is something many suddenly find themselves unable to do when staring across at Woods.
Saturday's Round of the Day
After birdieing his first two holes to go out in 33, PGA Tour veteran Brian Gay added five more birdies over his final six holes en route to a back-nine 29, and an eight-under-par 62 at the Mayakoba Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Scoring conditions were clearly favorable as six men shot 64...but 64 isn't 62.
- Overnight UPDATE: Louis Oosthuizen said he'd be aiming for Mark McNulty's 72-hole Sunshine Tour scoring record of 259 today in Johannesburg, and after making six birdies in his first 10 holes (and opening a 15 shot lead!) he looked very much on track to do just that. A bogey at the 11th has just slowed his momentum, however...but at least Oosthuizen can fire at the pins with zero concern for anyone lurking over his shoulder.
- Overnight UPDATE #2: One record missed, one record made. Oosthuizen birdied the 13th and 14th but was unable to make fours at the par-5 16th or 18th, landing him on 260, one stroke shy of the Sunshine Tour's 72-hole record. He did, however, set a record for margin of victory, routing runner-up (and close friend) Hennie Otto by a staggering 14 shots. All told, 30 birdies and an eagle over 72 holes is some pretty impressive stuff - and at nearly 7,500 yards, the Country Club of Johannesburg's Woodmead course can hardly be written off as a pushover!
