DAILY NOTES - March 9, 2008

- Ogilvy Back In Form:  It’s good to see Geoff Ogilvy, one of professional golf’s deeper thinkers, play himself into contention over the first three rounds of the rain-delayed PODS Championship.  The 2008 season has thus far been a wash for the 2006 U.S. Open and WGC-Match Play champion, with missed cuts in San Diego, Phoenix and Los Angeles – the latter with a second-round 77 that nullified a fine Thursday 69.  At the PODS, however, opening rounds of 69-72 had him lurking, and a Saturday 69 recorded in some occasionally stiff breezes, left him tied with Brandt Snedeker and Billy Mayfair (neither of whom finished play), two shots behind leader Stewart CinkTom Pernice Jr. and Sean O’Hair are tied at 211, three back of Cink.  With only six players needing to complete their third rounds on Sunday morning, there should little disruption to the day’s regular schedule of play.

- Meanwhile, In Japan...:  Korea’s 22-year-old Bo-Bae Song was a four-time winner in her homeland before playing full-time in Japan in 2007, where she debuted with a 16th-place Order of Merit finish.  Getting her second Japanese campaign off to a flying start, Song shot steadily decreasing rounds of 70-67-65 to win the season-opening Daikin Orchid by four over fellow 22-year-old Sakura Yokomine.  The key to her seven-under-par final round were eagles at the 487-yard fourth and the 507-yard 11th, the latter sparking the back-nine 31 that proved to be the difference.

Saturday’s Round of the Day

…Goes to Argentina’s Daniel Vancsik, and not just because I looked favorably upon him in a pre-tournament forecast.  Vancsik’s 64 opened with an eagle at the 544-yard first, then counted seven more birdies against a single bogey as the powerful 30-year-old lifted himself back into contention.

Amazingly, Song wasn't the only one with two eagles that day! (Check my final update....)
